A map is an integral part of almost every mobile app. It helps users to find the closest pizza place or meet their taxi driver. User experience with the map and the way it looks play a vital role in overall user experience of the mobile app. That’s why choosing the right map to display, while developing a mobile app, is so important. But what does it mean to choose the right map? Every app has a different purpose and therefore different types of maps are relevant for each app. Customizing a map style has never been easier with the recently released TomTom Map Customization Tool. The functionality is simple: you can build and edit your map style, export the results to JSON file and incorporate the project to display in your app. It’s so simple that any average tech-savvy person could create a custom map style.

Customers continue to demand more from their favorite retail brands. They want longer opening hours, faster checkout, cheaper prices and better selection. One answer to provide all of this are autonomous stores - just grab and go. Valora, the company behind iconic brands such as k kiosk and Brezelkönig, is bringing these concepts to Switzerland with their avec box and k kiosk box stores. In his keynote, Michael will give insights into the tech behind the store of the future and the unique challenges of operating software that interacts with the physical world. Michael is Head of Digital Product Development at Valora and responsible that the company is leading the way in customer experience and convenience. He is an alum of ETH Zurich, a HackZurich veteran and recently made the jump from his own start-up to the corporate world.

The Internet has been successful beyond even the most optimistic expectations. However, the current state of security and availability of the Internet is far from proportionate with its importance. While the application and the physical layers have adapted to new needs and trends, the core protocols have remained mostly unchanged for decades. In particular, the Internet was not adequately designed for high availability in the face of (human) errors and attacks. The SCION secure Internet architecture, developed at ETH Zurich, is a next-generation disruptive network technology. Through its path-aware architecture and distributed trust model, SCION solves many of the problems that plague today’s Internet. In this talk, we present SCION, its goals, design, and the results of a decade of research at ETH Zurich. Furthermore, we present practical use-cases that are currently in live deployments and a roadmap how we can transfer this technology from the research lab to the real world.
